Best paid showbiz stars of 2022 revealed - with old faces topping list

Rock pioneers headed the list of biggest earning in the world of showbiz last year. Genesis, fronted by Phil Collins, came out as the top earners - despite poor health leaving the music legend no longer able to tour.

The band was reported to have netted $230m - roughly £200m - after selling their music rights to Concord Music Group in September. This included Collins solo classic hit In the Air Tonight.

With a final tour and music royalties adding to their earnings the band came away with £189m after costs and other fees were taken off. The list was drawn up by Forbes which looked at pretax earnings, minus fees for representation—managers, lawyers, agents—and/or business operating costs plus other sources including interviews with agents, lawyers, managers, executives and industry experts.

Other big names in the top 10 coming from the world of music included 70s and 80s star Sting - appearing for the first time with a reported earning of $210m - and the Rolling Stones. Meanwhile there was just one woman in the top 10 - Taylor Swift - who came in at number nine.

Sting - who headed the 70s and 80s band The Police - pocketed $300m before fees after selling his back catalogue to Universal Musicn Group in February. After fees he came away with $210m (£173m) according to the report.

In at number 7 were the Rolling Stones which marked their 60-year anniversary with a European tour helping take their earnings to $98m (around £80m). It was reported that the band pocketed more than £7m a night on their 15-city tour, according to concert tracker Pollstar.

Taylor Swift saw a combination of earnings including physical record sales, streaming, digital downloads and licensing, take her reported earnings to $92m - approximately £76m. With a major 52-night US tour coming in 2023 she has the potential for even bigger earnnings this year, it predicted.
