Best paid first jobs for graduates and where to look to find them

The highest paid jobs for graduates are in engineering, technology and property firms - with salaries of more than £24,000 a year.

After that, consultancy, sales, marketing and finance firms are also advertising positions paying more than £21,000, according to jobs site CV-Library .

Chief executive Lee Biggins said: "It is no surprise that the most skilled and technical industries command the highest salaries, especially for new graduates.

"These positions are hotly contested, but the highest paying roles are most frequent in the market right now."

Overall, one in four jobs on the site are in the sales industry, followed by recruitment (15%), IT (12%), engineering (7%) and marketing (7%), said the report.

But while nothing to be sniffed at, it's far less than the some are making.

Last year benchmarking site Emolument found that some graduates working in the finance and banking sector can pick up a salary of up to £85,000 a year.

On average, recent university students in the finance sector were making £65,000, plus a £20,000 bonus at the end of the year, the site found.

But things were less good elsewhere, with job site Adzuna finding that overall advertised graduate salaries fell 12.2% from November 2016 to 2018, with the average wage for graduate roles last year standing at £21,814
