I sort of feel the same way about foundation as I do about a coat – in the colder months it’s nice to have that extra layer, regardless of whether you need it as much as you think you do. The great thing now is that brands seem to have cottoned on to the fact that we still want proper foundations, we just don’t want to wear too much of it. So they have invented lovely thin formulas, such as Sisley’s Phyto Teint Expert (£79.50, sisley.com), for the afraid. But this season I have also discovered that with the right brush, you can resist applying too much. YSL Fusion Ink Foundation (£30.50, yslbeauty.co.uk) – which is great for oily skin – has a slim sponge applicator that’s turning out to be a dream. A dream where our faces don’t look like cracked concrete.
