Best nail treatments and strengtheners for damaged nails

Since the UK government introduced strict lockdown measures to help fight the spread of coronavirus, all nail salons have been closed and many people have been forced to embrace their natural nails.

On social media, there have been a flurry of tutorials on how to remove grown-out acrylic or gel nails, which has led to flaky and brittle nails for some manicure addicts.

Others are suffering from weakened talons thanks to constant hand washing and the frequent use of hand sanitiser.

If your claws are in need of some TLC, there are plenty of nail treatments on the market that promise to strengthen and encourage healthy growth.

We picked out some of the best options available to buy now.

Sally Hansen Nail Rehab Strengthener, £8

This easy to use nail strengthener is ideal if your nails are severely dry, weak and brittle after using gel or acrylics. Simply apply two coats before you go to bed and wash off the treatment in the morning.

We noticed our nails were stronger after just five nights of using. The formula containing jasmine, rose and vitamin E added intense hydration to moisturise and protect the nails from further damage. It also helped to disguise blemishes.

Nails Inc Back to Life Recovery Treatment and Base, £15

Powered by five rich oils, this potent formula is designed to deliver intense relief to nails that are damaged by gel manicures. The base coat also provides a subtle hint of colour to create the appearance of naturally glowing nails. It's perfect for wearing on its own if you're keeping things simple, or can be used to prepare your nails for colour. Our nails started to feel stronger after just three weeks of using.

OPI Nail Envy, £18.65

If your nails are splitting or peeling, then this cult classic strengthener containing wheat protein and extra calcium is ideal. Two coats need to be applied to bare nails when you first apply, then you add another coat every other day. At the end of the week, remove and begin applying again. We found this one was particularly good for building up weak nails after using acrylics. It strengthens nails in just a few weeks.

Mavala Scientifique K+ Nail Hardener, £16.50

This trusty hardener is a bestseller across various stores for a good reason. Launched by Mavala over 60 years ago, it was reformulated in 2018 to include extra keratin for intense nourishment to make nails tougher than ever. It can be used up to three times a week on its own or underneath a base coat and colour.

Essie Treat Love Colour Care Nail Polish, £8.99

With no top or base coat required, this strengthening care and colour formula restores dry, brittle nails and makes them look healthy with beautiful colour. We applied two coats and was over the moon with the glossy colour.

CND Rescue Daily Keratin Treatment, £17.21

Keratin protein, jojoba oil and almond oil in this sweet-smelling treatment are quickly absorbed to condition, moisturise and strengthen unhealthy nails. It needs to be used at least twice daily for a minimum of two weeks and should be massaged into the nails and cuticles. This one was our favourite for improving flexibility in the nails.
