Best mushroom lamps to add a dash of 70s style to home decor

It may be blowing 90s trend winds in fashion, but in the world of interiors, we’re still revelling in the style shockwaves delivered by the 70s.

Arguably the best decade of style in all its forms (except for dinner party food), the Seventies hallmarks are back and revamped to bring a delicious retro twist to modern homes. You might call it an antidote to our austere times, or the natural swing of the pendulum away from minimal Japandi style. When you crave change, you tend to go for complete opposites.

From rattan and cane, to psychedelic prints on everything from wallpaper to soft furnishings, and curious squiggly-framed mirrors, maximalism is back, and we’re welcoming it with open arms.

When it comes to lighting, mushroom lamps are dominating the interiors scene.

What is a mushroom lamp?

Named because - you guessed it - they resemble cartoonish, Super Mario-style fungi. There are two styles to know: the Panthella, and the Murano.

What’s the difference between the two styles of mushroom lamps?

The Panthella is tall with a slim base and a broad, curved top. It comes in floor and desk versions.

Meanwhile, the Murano desk lamp is short and stout with a rounded base and triangular shade, all blown from one single piece of glass. Naturally, genuine Murano mushroom lamps are the more expensive of the two thanks to the level of craftsmanship involved in its making.

Interior designer and owner of Luna Spot Design Rochelle Dalphinis explains their appeal: “Mushrooms lamps make a gorgeous addition to a side or console table. The soft glow and beautiful curves make an elegant showpiece. I love the modern take on them, all blown glass and bright colours.

“For statement style, look to mushroom lamps with a flatter top in a bright colour that can sit on its own on a side table in the living or reading room but will still take centre stage. Smaller mushroom lamps add magic to a home bar or drinks trolly. Even using two or three cordless designs works for dinner party tablescapes.”
