Smaller motorway service operators are a bigger hit with customers than big brands.
That's according to Transport Focus, which has just released its latest report into what people think about the places they visit while on the motorway.
It found Extra (6 sites) and Westmorland (4 sites) had the joint highest satisfaction rating at 97%, followed by Euro Garages (2 sites).
Roadchef (23 sites) was the best performing big player, followed by Moto (45 sites) and Welcome Break (31 sites).
Transport Focus chief executive Anthony Smith said: "As the country emerges out of lockdown and people take to the roads for staycations this summer, motorway services will provide a vital opportunity for drivers to take a break on their journey.
"Motorway services provide customers with a great experience with friendly and helpful staff, but there is still room for improvement when it comes to the value for money of the food and drink on offer."
Visitors to service stations were least satisfied with the value for money of the food or drink they bought to eat (69%), cleanliness of toilets was rated as satisfactory by 89% of visitors, while friendliness and helpfulness of staff scored 94%.
But while Extra and Westmorland came out on top, Euro Garages had the biggest improvement.
All three of the larger operators also saw an increase in satisfaction this year, but not by enough to overtake the small providers at the top of the list.
