Monster Train 2 features five new clans for players, each with their starter champions who can have three different passive abilities at the start of your run.
You can place your champions without spending any resources during the deployment phase, and they form the core of your builds. They cannot be duplicated in your deck like other units, and they can only improve by gaining upgrades as you make progress in your run by defeating some bosses.
We list down the best Monster Train 2 champions based on their overall strength across different encounters.
Best Monster Train 2 champions, ranked

Every champion has their strengths and unique passive abilities, but choosing one also requires you to pick that champion’s clan as primary and stick with it throughout your run. There are multiple champions, including a variety of alternate champions for each clan that you can unlock later in the game.
For this list, we’ll stick to the five original ones that you can get immediately as you unlock all the new clans in Monster Train 2:
Bolete the Guillotine

Starting with the strongest champion in our runs, it’s none other than Bolete the Guillotine of the Underlegion clan. His best passive ability is Executioner, and it’s arguably the best passive ability for any champion in the game, where he gains rage and regen from each unit that dies on the floor.
Pair him with units like Green Recruit, Eager Conscript, Spawning Pods, and pretty much anything that spawns Funguy. Put them as a cushion to absorb damage from the enemy on the ground floor, and multiply Bolete’s stats every time the enemy’s unit dies. Your Funguy’s death also buffs him significantly to one-shot the enemy bosses.
Best Allied Clan: Lazarus League for buffing him using mix, and Luna Coven for using your conduit units to give him extra sustain and deal with smaller health units.
Ekka

Lady Ekka from the Luna Coven is one of the most versatile champions in Monster Train 2, and you’ll definitely fall in love with her and her obsession with the mooncycles. She has a good balance of attacking and defensive skills to get out of tricky situations, but you need to give her a good start by choosing a solid passive skill.
You can go for Celestial Spellweaver, which helps you rack in those sweet Conduit points to make her spells stronger and heals better in a room, or even go for Silver Empress if you prefer having an active ability to give you more spells to use and gather conduit points. She also gains a huge amount of conduit points during a full moon, allowing her to take down heavy targets with ease.
Best Allied Clan: Underlegion’s decay and Funguy spells help her nullify aggression from the enemy to build her conduit points. You can also choose the Pyreborne to stack up the Pyregel on your enemies and burst them down easily.
Lord Fenix

The fire and gold-loving dragon champion, Lord Fenix, belongs to the Pyreborne clan, and he is the only one who has a guaranteed ability, which doesn’t depend on his passive upgrades. Using the Fenix Fire ability, you can deal damage equal to his attack, so naturally, you need to take a path where you can increase his damage. You can take the vanilla path and choose Overlord, which increases your attack gradually upon every kill.
However, we’d recommend you select the Pyremaniac passive, as it applies four more Pyregel on the enemies, so you can blast them into smithereens by stacking it. There’s also a mechanic for summoning Dragon’s Hoard, which can give you rewards in the late game, but it’s a high-risk strategy.
Best Allied Clan: Lazarus League for buffing his attack using the mix cards, and the Banished for protecting him against danger from the early bosses while also increasing his attack using valor.
Fel

Who doesn’t love Multistrikes? If you love hitting the enemy twice or thrice in a row, then Fel is the one for you. She’s great at clearing small enemies and taking off the pressure from the other floors. Fel’s clan is one of the only angels who have escaped heaven in time to become the Banished, and she comes with some powerful passives.
Unchained, for example, allows her to synergize completely with the clan’s Shift mechanic to gain valor and gain attack damage along with some armour, if she is facing the enemy. However, it can also put her in danger a lot of times with debuffs. My absolute favorite is Savior, which gives her an active ability to gain valor and also provide armor to the units around her. She’s a bit weaker compared to other champions so you have to take a little extra care of her.
Best Allied Clan: Lazarus League for buffing her using mix, and Luna Coven to use the conduits to heal her occasionally to keep her safe, as she needs a frontline for her to deal consistent damage to enemies.
Orechi

Love experimenting with mixes? Orechi’s just the guy for you. Representing the Lazarus League clan, the mad scientist champion excels at making enemies unstable and explode. If you enjoy using the Secret Ingredient card to make free spells to control the tempo of the matches, the Brewmaster gives you the ability to brew often.
My personal favorite is Mad Scientist, where using a spell applies unstable to your enemies, making it easier to defeat smaller targets so that your team can focus on the bigger fish. He has a bit of a steep learning curve to understand his mixing mechanic, but if you’ve learnt that, he can easily be one of your top champions to use in your high Convenant runs as well.
Best Allied Clan: Underlegion provides a great cushion for your characters to soak up enemy damage while you mix to put them on the back foot, and Pyreborne units also make it easier to trigger the unstable blast on your enemies using the Pyregel.
