But instead of matching boutonnieres, stars match their entire ensembles for the event, turning the gala into one big best-dressed couples contest.
Tom Brady and Giselle Bundchen have been Met Gala staples for over ten years now. Each year, the football icon hits the red carpet in support of his model wife, sporting his best interpretation of the theme. Last year he and Bundchen matched in gold for 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,' and his slicked back hair and black turtleneck sparked a slew of magician memes that nearly broke the Internet.
In 2016, Kim Kardashian-West and Kanye West dazzled everyone when they showed up in Rousteing’s forward-looking aesthetic for Balmain, sparkling from head to toe. The theme was 'Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology' and both Wests dived right in.
One of America’s favorite couples – Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively – love a PDA on the Met Gala red carpet. Whether they’re both caught gazing into each other’s eyes or Reynolds is admiring Lively’s low-cut Gucci gown (as he was in 2014) the duo is a Met Gala power pairing.
In addition to making statements with their fashion, couples have also utilized the event to announce their relationships publicly. Selena Gomez and the Weeknd notably couldn’t keep their paws off each other at the 2017 Met Gala, when they went official as a couple for the first time. Elon Musk and Grimes also made their first couple appearance at last year’s Met Gala.
