Best Megabonk Tomes tier list

Having a successful run in Megabonk depends on multiple factors, and your Tomes will often decide how long the runs will be.

In simple words, Tomes are different modifiers that you can equip in your run. These modifiers either improve your stats or improve your weapons. Tomes have different in-game effects; you can only equip a limited number on a run.

As a result, you'll want to equip Tomes that are more effective in the current meta.

Complete Megabonk Tomes tier list

Unlike items and characters, grading Tomes is harder. Their usage often depends on your active build, but I have still used four different tiers to separate all available options.

  • S-tier Tomes are the best options in the current meta. They typically have good synergy with most builds in the game.
  • A-tier Tomes are close to S-tier names, but have subtle limitations.
  • B-tier Tomes are helpful when used in the correct builds, but not much use elsewhere.
  • C-tier Tomes are poor choices and not worth locking onto your slots.

S-tier

  • Agility: This is a good choice for many characters, since only a handful have high movement speed. Even if you're using a ranged character like CL4NK, you'll want to have high movement speed to escape unexpected, tricky situations. For assassin-type builds, high movement speed can also scale up the damage.
  • Projectile Speed: Plenty of weapons use projectiles, and this tome raises the speed. More speed means more projectiles, which translates into greater damage.
  • XP: Having more XP is key (getting better builds raises your chances of success). This tome raises the amount of experience you get from every source, and works well with any character, item, or weapon.
  • Luck: Having more luck on your run will allow you to find better weapon upgrades and rarer items. Their effects will push your chances of victory, and the Luck Tome works well with any build.
  • Quantity: One of the best buffs for your attacks, as it raises the number of attacks and projectiles. Works well with every weapon and character, which is a bonus. This is one of my favorite choices, irrespective of what build I have in mind.
  • Cooldown: This tome reduces the waiting period between attacks and directly raises your attack speed. It's a must-have while using slow weapons, but a good choice for any build.

A-tier

  • Size: This tome increases the size of your attacks, projectiles, and explosions, resulting in more damage. The increased damage isn't 'broken', but adds to the overall performance of your build. This is a safe choice for every character, and a good backup option if you have multiple slots.
  • Shield: Having a shield allows you to preserve your health, and it can also regenerate if you don't take damage for a certain time. However, this window (when you have to prevent taking damage) is low, and shields can get destroyed easily in late-game stages.
  • Regen: The Regen Tome is a must-have for certain characters that need healing. However, some items are substituted in their place, reducing their importance.
  • Precision: This tome allows you to deal critical damage and scale up beyond 100%. Critical hits do more damage, and Precision is a must-have for characters like CL4NK and Dicehead.
  • Bloody: This tome provides consistent healing when you deal damage. If you scale up this tome's effect beyond 100%, you'll gain two heals instead per hit. This is only at A-tier because not every character requires great healing.
  • Damage: Since you can raise the damage of your attacks with this tome, it's generally a good choice. However, the buff values are lower than my expectations, and there are other ways to improve your attack (for example, by increasing crit chance). Damage should be a good secondary pick if you find it on a run.

B-tier

  • Knockback: Knockback works well with melee-type characters, as you can push the enemy back. However, the essence of this tome becomes redundant if you're using range characters, as you will be able to deal with them from a distance. This tome is also highly recommended for beginners.
  • HP: Another valuable tome for beginners, since you'll get a higher HP pool. I have rated it low since there are different items and weapons to substitute its in-game effects.
  • Evasion: This is the only method to avoid taking any damage completely. However, evading an attack depends on luck, and the rate is too low for my liking. I also don't like to rely on RNG Jesus to decide how long I can survive.
  • Duration: raises the duration of your attacks and projectiles, but the buff isn't very noticeable.
  • Armor: Having more Armor is beneficial, but not so much for non-tank units. However, this tome is an A-tier choice if you use a tank. For DPS-focused characters, Armor won't have too many use-case scenarios.

C-tier

  • Silver: Having more Silver will be key if you're a beginner. However, Silver isn't a problem once you are past the beginner stage. Hence, I have put this into the bottom tier. If you're a beginner, consider Silver Tome as A-tier instead.
  • Chaos: While the chaos tome boosts a random stat, it could end up buffing an area that is not required. This effect is too random for my liking.
  • Cursed: If you're a try-hard, consider this as S-tier. For regular gamers, having an added difficulty won't bring any extra rewards, so I fail to understand the point.
  • Attraction: Unless you choose to stand in a single spot on your run, an expanded pickup range for XP isn't available. This tome can also work for some ranged characters, but its effects feel stronger on paper than they actually are.
  • Thorns: Enemies getting damage when they try to hit you reads cool, but doesn't work as consistently as you might think.
