'Best leg of darts ever seen' blows everyone away as video footage seen by millions

It has been hailed as the best leg of darts ever seen, and you'll find few who will disagree.

In the PDC World Darts Championship final, Michael Smith needed a break in the second set against Michael van Gerwen, and he well and truly sealed it in style.

Smith and van Gerwen both struck six successive trebles to move three darts away from a nine-dart finish, although van Gerwen missed 144 on double 12 for the perfect leg. Smith, the eventual winner, returned to send the crowd into euphoria as he went 141 using treble 20, treble 19, double 12 before going on to win the set.

The leg saw fans both at Alexandra Palace and watching on TV blown away, with a PDC Darts clip on Twitter being viewed more than 13 million times the morning after the final.

Smith banked £500,000 in prize money for winning his maiden world title. Victory at Alexandra Palace now means the 32-year-old is the world number one.

Peter Wright is currently second on the Order of Merit while van Gerwen is third, with Wales star Gerwyn Price dropping to fourth following his defeat in the quarter-finals.
