'Best Indian restaurant in Bristol' dodged more than £60k in tax

A highly rated Redland restaurant evaded more than £60,000 in tax.

Hari Krishnan's Kitchen, on Zetland Road, defaulted on £61,222.67 between April 2015 and April 2017.

The business appeared this month on HMRC’s list of deliberate tax defaulters – and has been handed a £42,855.86 penalty.

Hari Krishnan’s Kitchen has a four-star average rating after 188 TripAdvisor reviews.

One, from September, reads: “The best Indian food in Bristol. Fish Molly is off the scale delicious. Their bean dishes are to die for. The tarka dahl is perfect.”

HMRC lists the director of the business at the time of the tax evasion as Balamuralikrishannair Thekketh.

Companies House says Harikrishnan's Kitchen Limited, run by Balamuralikrishannair Thekketh, dissolved in March due to voluntary strike-off.

It does not appear to have been replaced by a new business on the Companies House register, but the Hari Krishnan’s Kitchen restaurant has continued to trade from the site since March. It is not clear if Mr Thekketh continues to be involved.

The restaurant, which bills itself as “South Indian cuisine from God's Own Country”, has been offering takeaways on Deliveroo during the coronavirus lockdown.

It has two TripAdvisor reviews from the last three weeks – both five stars.

One praises the “delicious food and lovely people”, while the other says: “More varied than most. Lots of interesting vegetable options.”

HMRC publishes details on its list when a person or business has made at least one deliberate default on more than £25,000.

The list is updated every three months and a defaulter's details are removed after a year.

The HMRC website warns: “If you wait until HMRC investigates you, and do not provide all the information we need right at the start of the investigation, you run the risk of having your details published.”

Hari Krishnan's was approached for comment.
