Best hair dyes for men and top tips for colouring your hair at home

So, you’re considering dyeing your hair? Well, there’s no time like the present.

Maybe you’re after a blonde bombshell transformation taking a leaf out of Nicholas Hoult’s freshly unveiled book, or perhaps your salt is starting to overtake the pepper (and who can blame you after the stress of the last few years?).

Either way, it seems you're not alone, as Josh Wood, one of the world's best hair colourists, explains: "There is much more demand in the male market for colour. Both grey blending and statement shades from platinum to pink. It’s great to see that the freedom for guys to express themselves with hair colour is so on trend."

First up, let’s talk greys. We’re all into the silver fox aesthetic - just take a look at George Clooney or Patrick Dempsey to see how men really do mature like a fine wine. But, sometimes, it’s hard to accept the look on yourself. So, if you’re yet to embrace your newfound maturity, why not try hair colour to restore your natural shade while you wait it out?

When it comes to covering silvery undertones, you'll be spoilt for choice by the options on the market. From the tried and tested Just For Men to the easily applied L'Oreal Paris Men Expert, it's never been more straightforward for us gents to keep our colour looking fresh.

Or perhaps a full transformation is on the cards. As someone who's been dabbling with hair dye for the past two years, trust me when I say you won't regret it. Whether you're feeling bored of your brunette barnet or you've never tried changing your colour and it's simply an itch you need to scratch, it's time to take the proverbial plunge and invest in one of our carefully selected dyes below.

But first, we've got some top tips from Josh Wood, the king of hair colour himself.

What is your advice for men when it comes to dying hair at home?

If you are colouring to blend grey, which most men are, there three main rules:

  1. Avoid using rust or orange tones, as they are a dead giveaway. Instead, focus on cooler colours such as ash, graphite, and olive green, depending on skin tone.
  2. Don’t cover all of the greys. Leaving a little looks more realistic and less 'helmet head' - blending is the answer, not saturating.
  3. Commit to keeping it up. If hair is short, the colour may need a gloss or toner every couple of weeks.

How do you achieve the shade you want?

Don’t go too dark. Always aim for a lighter shade than your natural colour because lighter ash tones are more flattering and regrowth will be less obvious. If you're stuck, get a professional consultation to understand what tone is going to look most natural.

How should you treat hair after dyeing it?

Care is vital to keeping the colour looking fresh. Always choose a product formulated for coloured hair and play around with colour correctors. Violet tones will kill any brassy yellow tones and ash or smoky tones will banish orange.
