Glastonbury 50th anniversary: Best looks of all time, from Kate Moss to Alexa Chung

Today marks the 50th year anniversary of the iconic British music festival, which took place in 1970 and was attended by just 1,500 people.

Since then, the annual celebration has become just as exciting for musical fans as it has for fashion ones.

There was a time when festival fashion was a slave to practicality: wear wellies to keep the mud off and waterproof jackets to stay dry – maybe splash some glitter on your cheeks for good measure.

At least, it was until Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung started going to Glastonbury, and soon turned the Pilton-based bacchanal into as much of a sartorial spectacle as a musical one.

Vinyl trousers, low-hanging disc belts and slip dresses were the key staples, marking the beginning of the “boho chic” trend that soon became synonymous with the aforementioned starlets.

Elsewhere, Hunter wellies were paired with waistcoats and denim cut-offs, while leather jackets were thrown over just about everything you could think of.

You only have to click through a few archive snaps to see just how different the Glastonbury aesthetic from the days of yore was from the glossy sheen of glitter, neon and sequins you see at festivals now.

Glastonbury Festival: Best celebrity looks over the years

Unlike the sprightly-clothed crowd at Coachella – whose California sunshine lends itself to tropical prints and tie-dye – the early noughties Glastonbury attendee favoured a more muted sartorial palette, predicated by grungy khakis and distressed denims.

From those famous snaps of Moss with former boyfriend Pete Doherty to more recent, but no less notable, contributions from Daisy Lowe, Edie Campbell and Adwoa Aboah, browse through the best looks from Glastonbury over the years by clicking through the gallery above.
