Best gaming keyboards in May 2023

When trying to find the best gaming keyboard on the market, it can be quite difficult with options galore. So many brands are now throwing their typers into the mix, trying to design the best option for gaming. We've taken all of the difficulty out of the equation and tested a whole load of options and these are our best gaming keyboards.

1. Razer Blackwidow V4 Pro – best gaming keyboard overall

The Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro is one of the best keyboards we've ever tested. It offers a whole host of features including eight macro keys, three of which are actually on the side of the keyboard, USB passthrough, dedicated media keys, a command dial and an RGB wrist rest. Now that's a list and a half.

Our review of the keyboard found it exceptionally comfortable to use thanks to the wrist rest and ergonomic design. You also have countless options with macro keys and the command dial which made me feel like a pro gamer and tech guru, casting spells left, right and centre and opening windows without even having to move my mouse.

This keyboard very comfortably takes the top spot, with one of the only downsides being the footprint and weight. It's one hefty device which won't be suited to all desk sizes and definitely isn't a portable option.

2. Logitech G915 Lightspeed – best wireless gaming keyboard

It was a pretty close call between the Logitech G915 Lightspeed and the Razer Blackwidow V4 Pro for the top spot. This keyboard really proved itself during testing, having awesome features, such as macro keys, a control panel and dedicated media keys. You can choose between 2.4GHz wireless or a wireless Bluetooth connection.

It's a delight to type on thanks to its low-profile keycaps and held up well in games too. Despite being mechanical, it puts up quite a fight even against some of the optical options I've tested, inputs are picked up instantly and it's comfortable to use.

It also looks pretty stylish and is lightweight and slim enough to fit comfortably into any set-up without taking up too much room or feeling bulky, which is the one downside of the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro.

3. Roccat Vulcan II Max – best optical gaming keyboard

The first thing you'll notice about this keyboard is the RGB which, of course, makes you a better gamer. Ok maybe not, but we think it looks really good. But, this isn't all that's on offer here. You get hybrid mechanical-optical switches, for faster inputs, and fully customizable key functionality.

The conclusion of our review was that it's a great option for those who are looking to delve into professional play or just want that competitive edge, especially where the speed of your inputs really makes a difference. Optical switches mean that your inputs are registered faster compared to mechanical switches. You also get the benefit of macros to make spell-casting or combos in-game much easier.

4. Surefire Kingpin M1 – best budget gaming keyboard

Surefire Kingpin M1 Gaming Keyboard Review (Jasmine Mannan)

If you're looking for a budget gaming keyboard option, but still want to have the benefit of mechanical switches, then the Surefire Kingpin M1 is the way to go. This is a compact 60% keyboard which is well-designed and features customisable RGB, which is impressive at this price point.

You get the benefit of the Surefire software here, which allows you to rebind every single key, meaning if you ever miss any keys from your full form factor keyboard, you can add them to your typer. However, when testing this keyboard we found that the large actuation point on the switches didn't make it optimal for gaming.

This keyboard is by no means made for your pro gamers out there, but if you want a high-quality mechanical keyboard for a lower price, then this is a good option. It's also great if you have a small desk and want a compact kit.

5. Razer Deathstalker V2 Pro – best low-profile gaming keyboard

Razer has done a great job with the design of the V2 Pro, so much so that pictures don't really do it justice, particularly in regards to just how low-profile it is. (Razer)

The Razer Deathstalker V2 Pro is a fantastic low-profile, wireless keyboard and is great if you're looking for something lightweight and portable but still able to pack a punch while gaming. You get optical switches and multi-media controls all wrapped up in a beautiful ultra-slim casing.

If you prefer low-profile keyboards, which typically feel like they have a smaller actuation point and travel distance, then look no further. When reviewing this keyboard we found that when both typing and gaming, inputs were registered faster than that of a regular mechanical keyboard.

This makes an excellent option for those who want their inputs registered as quickly as possible, whether you use the keyboard for word processing or when gaming.

6. Razer Huntsman V2 TKL – best tenkeyless gaming keyboard

Razer Huntsman V2 Review (Razer)

If you're looking for a high-performance gaming keyboard then the Razer Huntsman V2 may be the one for you. Despite not having too many flashy features, our review found that it still managed to live up to its price point when testing as it allowed for faster inputs due to its optical switches.

You also get a wrist rest, something missing from many TKL options on the market. The build quality is fantastic, boasting excellent switches and stabs to make typing, and gaming with it, really feel satisfying. Another benefit is that the keys don't actually feel optical, so if you're a big fan of that satisfying mechanical click like I am, then this is the right typer for you.

However, the downside here is that you won't find any fancy features, like macro keys, USB passthrough or multimedia buttons. If you want something more feature-rich, then this may not be the right option for you.

7. Asus ROG Azoth – best hot-swappable gaming keyboard

The Asus ROG Azoth gaming keyboard is hot-swappable allowing you to change your switches with ease. (ASUS)

If you're after something hot-swappable then the Asus Rog Azoth is a great option, with pre-installed NX red mechanical switches, you're able to pull these out and swap them around with your favourite switch with ease. This keyboard is also wireless and 60% making it a perfectly portable option.

As if this wasn't premium enough, it also features an OLED screen, because of course they're being stuck onto everything now! This allows you to display a keyboard status or an animation, whatever suits you best.

The downside here is that of course a keyboard this jam-packed has a price to match, meaning you really have to decide if you really need all of these features before making the commitment. However, if you really do want a hot-swappable gaming keyboard, the Asus ROG Azoth is the best one on the market.
