Best destinations for a solo travel adventure - and all are easy to reach from UK

More people are planning a solo travel adventure as travel restrictions finally ease following the pandemic.

New research by luggage storage specialist Bounce has revealed the best countries in the world for those who want to travel alone - and the top three destinations are within easy reach of the UK with connections from many regional airports.

The research looked at a host of essential factors such as cost of public transport, crime and safety, temperature, cost of hotel stay, quality of hostels, bars, restaurants, attractions, group activities and rainfall.

Here are the top countries for solo travellers, according to the study.

1. Iceland

Iceland is an increasingly popular destination for solo travellers, and with good reason. It was the highest-ranking country in three of the 12 sections, especially outdoor pursuits exploring the various glaciers, volcanoes, caves, and caverns.

Most people visiting the country base themselves in the capital, Reykjavík, before taking day trips out to various natural landmarks and attractions.

It’s also an exceptionally safe country, with a high safety level score and low crime levels, meaning that you can explore this beautiful country with peace of mind.

2. Malta

The Mediterranean island is known for its historical ties to multiple dynasties and evidence of its colourful history is abundant.

Malta’s location in the Mediterranean Sea, between Sicily and the coast of North Africa, means that it also benefits from beautiful weather, and was amongst the driest and warmest of the nations on the list.

3.Portugal

Portugal is known for its beautiful landscapes, beaches and architecture, and great seafood. But it’s also a friendly and safe country, with one of the highest safety and lowest crime scores.

Further findings:

  • The USA has the highest proportion of bars per person, with 27.8 per 100,000 people

  • Japan is the best country for foodies as it has 636 restaurants per 100,000 people

  • Sri Lanka was the cheapest country for the average cost of a nightly hotel stay at just £17.10 a night

The index added: "Whether you’re embarking on a gap year or looking for a new experience later in life, travelling on your own can be a pretty daunting experience, so we’ve analysed a number of destinations around the world to find out which are the best, safest, and most affordable places for solo travel.

"There are plenty of reasons why travelling alone can be a super rewarding experience.

"Solo travel opens up a lot of opportunities and freedoms, allowing you to make your own agenda, make new friends, and grow as a person."
