'Best compliment I can give' - Newcastle fans react amid pole position to sign Man United defender

Newcastle fans are excited about the prospect of signing Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe on a season-long loan deal.

Chronicle Live understands that the Magpies are in 'pole position' to sign the 23-year-old centre-half, with the player and his representatives 'delighted' about the prospect of moving to Tyneside.

Tuanzebe has previously spent time on loan at Aston Villa where he worked under Newcastle boss Steve Bruce.

And with Manchester United agreeing a deal in principle to sign Real Madrid's World Cup winning defender Raphael Varane, Tuanzebe is set to be available on a season-long loan deal this term.

As things stand, Newcastle - who are in the market for a new defender - lead the race for his signature and fans have been quick to express their delight on social media.

Jake Jackman tweeted: "I’ve said before the summer Tuanzebe would be a good addition. If he signs, there will be suspense over who fills the last PL loan spot."

Tom Horner added: "This is the type of centre half we need."

Connor Keegan reasoned: "About the best compliment I can give Bruce is he does know the types of players we're missing."

However, Twitter user 'GW' remained sceptical, tweeting: "It’s actually a very good signing considering the absolute state we’re in at the moment. Knowing us, we’ll still manage to mess up signing a player who is actually keen to join us for a change, just as we will with Joe Willock."
