The history lesson that could pave way for Nottingham Forest promotion success

It is heading towards crunch time in the Championship, with just nine games of the regular season remaining - and plenty still to play for.

Nottingham Forest are very much in the mix.

It has been an exciting battle at the top end, with several teams all fancying their chances of a play-offs spot.

Still, it’s getting to that stage of the campaign where we start to see the main runners and riders emerge, while others begin to fall away.

Sabri Lamouchi’s Reds are right there amongst it, and look to have a great chance of a top six finish, currently sitting in fifth.

Back-to-back disappointing performances against Middlesbrough and Millwall last week came as a blow, but Forest will be aiming to get back on track against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

It is looking like a tough ask to reach the automatic promotion places, with second-placed West Bromwich Albion 10 points ahead of them.

And while they will still not be ruling it out, if they do fall short of the top two does it matter in which position Lamouchi's men finish, if they are to give themselves the best chance of play-offs success?

Far be it from us to get carried away(!) - and of course, nothing is guaranteed - but we’ve taken a look at the numbers to see if history offers any guide about what may lie ahead.

Here is who went up via the play-offs in the last 15 years, and where they had finished in the table:

2018/19: Aston Villa - finished 5th

2017/18: Fulham - finished 3rd

2016/17: Huddersfield - finished 5th

2015/16: Hull City - finished 4th

2014/15: Norwich City - finished 3rd

2013/14: QPR - finished 4th

2012/13: Crystal Palace - finished 5th

2011/12: West Ham - finished 3rd

2010/11: Swansea - finished 3rd

2009/10: Blackpool - finished 6th

2008/09: Burnley - finished 5th

2007/08: Hull City - finished 3rd

2006/07: Derby County - finished 3rd

2005/06: Watford - finished 3rd

2004/05: West Ham - finished 6th

So, third place has yielded the most play-offs winners, with seven; fifth place has also been pretty successful, with four.

Based on that, fourth and sixth-placed finishes seem to be the ones to avoid, with two winners apiece.

But Forest nevertheless, do have a good record against those teams who make up the top six at the moment. West Brom are the only ones to have beaten them, on the opening day.

Since then, they have drawn with the Baggies, taken four points off Leeds United, twice claimed wins over Brentford, emerged victorious at Fulham and drawn against Preston - with reverse fixtures against those last two still to come.

Of course, the Reds’ priority is to make sure they are in the top six come May - there’s no room for complacency in this division.

And it would take a brave person to predict what will happen beyond that, especially as much can happen between now and then.

But as Lamouchi has mentioned many times of late, he is eager to increase the belief!
