Best buildings of 2020 announced

A wooden chapel in a forest, an enchanting bookstore “straight out of a movie” and an Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakech are among the winners of ArchDaily’s Building of the Year Awards 2020.

More than 95,000 people voted in 15 different categories, which highlighted a wide range of interventions, typologies, scale, material and locations.

Projects were recognised from the Global South to Scandinavian territories, with new names surfacing like Studio Ko, as well as established high-profile figures like Sou Fujimoto for his French residential tower.

In Ecuador, perched on an existing building in a popular neighbourhood, Parasite House focused on solving basic habitation necessities. It is just 12 square metres and includes a bathroom, kitchen, bed, storage space and socialising space.

The Independent has collected all of the winning buildings in the gallery above.
