Best Black Friday UK deals for 2020 as huge day arrives from Argos, Amazon, Currys, John Lewis and more

Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping day of the year has arrived, with deals set to continue right through the weekend to Cyber Monday.

Some savvy shoppers have already been making the most of early Black Friday deals, which kickstarted at the beginning of November at several major retailers, but today it is expected that Brits will spend over £2bn more online this year online as a result of store closures - as many make a start on that all important Christmas shopping.

So far there have been big savings from popular high street and online names, including ASOS, Boots, Currys, John Lewis and Amazon, with many opting to spread out their sales for longer this year compared to 2019.

Huge demand has seen website crashes from key retailers like Boots, who have had a surge in demand over the last 24 hours - but only time will tell if more sites will experience outages as more shoppers pile online. But experts are advising shoppers to do their research to ensure they really are getting the best value deals.

Commenting on Black Friday sales, Natalie Hitchins, Which? Head of home products and services, says: “Deals that look too good to be true often are, so don’t fall for time-limited offers and if you are looking for something in particular, do some research first. That way you’ll know a genuine bargain when you see one.”

Retailers already taking part in Black Friday 2020

When is Black Friday 2020 and what to expect?

This year Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November, with millions of products slashed as many shoppers prepare for the festive season ahead.

Many sales are expected to run until Cyber Monday, which falls on 30 November this year.

Speaking about the expected surge in shoppers, Tom Church, Co-Founder of money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk said: "We've seen a year-on-year surge of 302% of online shoppers via our Black Friday app, and I predict that we will see record online spending in the UK for Black Friday 2020.”

“However, deals will be worse for consumers. I am in conversation with online retailers throughout the year, and the general sentiment is that because online demand is so high, they will not have to discount as much to get sales. It’s more important than ever that consumers check the price history of products to make sure they’re getting a good price.”

“Physical stores with a smaller online presence are also less likely to discount as much because they need high-profit margins to offset lockdown losses.”

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday was originally an American tradition, dropping on the day after Thanksgiving each year, but quickly transferred to across the pond.

Now most major UK retailers offer massive discounts as part of the huge shopping event in an attempt to persuade you to spend your hard earned cash in the run-up to Christmas.

Over the last few years the UK event has become more of an online affair. In 2018 while UK high streets remained deserted, online tills were ringing in £2.4billion splurge.

With many shoppers stuck at home due to lockdowns across the country, this trend is set to continue for 2020. One thing is for certain, the chaotic in store scenes witnessed across America during the sales will not be around this year - and could possibly be gone for good.

Why is it called Black Friday?

Nobody's entirely sure, but most suggestions relate back to how businesses and retailers detail their finances.

Many shops see the biggest profits of the year on Black Friday and businesses will detail their gains in black ink (and losses in red ink), hence the name.
