Liverpool will learn their Champions League fate when the group stage draw is carried out this afternoon in Geneva.
As Premier League champions, Liverpool have automatically been placed in Pot 1 along with the title winners of other top-ranking European leagues and the winners of the Champions League and Europa League.
That means Jurgen Klopp's side will not meet the likes of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus or Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage while Zenit St Petersburg, Porto and Sevilla are also in Pot 1 so are not possible opponents.
In Pot 2, country protection means Liverpool cannot face Manchester City, Manchester United or Chelsea.
The Reds could, though, face Barcelona, Atletico Madrid (with new recruit Luis Suarez) or Borussia Dortmund from that pot and that any of those sides will present a very tough challenge both and away fixtures.
Elsewhere in Pot 2, Klopp's men could find themselves with an arguably more favourable tie against Shakhtar Donetsk or Ajax.
Pot 3, meanwhile, also contains some challenging teams.
Liverpool could end up being drawn against any one of RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg or Inter Milan.
They may also be placed alongside Olympiacos, Krasnodar or Lazio from this pot but last season's semi-finalists Atalanta are also in the mix here as are Dinamo Kiev.
From Pot 4, the world champions could face Borussia Monchengladbach, Marseille or end up having to travel long distances to play against Lokomotiv Moscow or Istanbul Kasaksehir.
Other possible opponents here include Bruges, Midtjylland FC and Rennes while Ferencvaros - who made it through four qualifying round to reach the main group stage - are also involved.
