Besiktas release Wout Weghorst statement amid Manchester United transfer push

Besiktas have confirmed that Wout Weghorst’s season-long loan has been terminated by mutual consent.

The club will receive £2.5m in compensation, as previously reported by the Manchester Evening News. In Friday’s press conference, United manager Erik ten Hag said the signing of Weghorst was 'close' but that he would not be available for Saturday’s derby with Manchester City.

"I think we are close so he won’t be available for tomorrow," Ten Hag said. "Weghorst was not even available in the last weeks so it would be a bonus if he was. But hopefully it would be soon that he will be there.”

On Friday evening, Besiktas confirmed that both the club and the player had agreed to a loan termination.

A statement from the Turkish club said: “The temporary transfer agreement with our professional football player Wout François Maria Weghorst and his club has been terminated by mutual agreement with the player and his club.

Due to the early termination of the contract by the Burnley FC club, a termination fee of €2,825,000 will be paid to our Company.” Weghorst scored nine goals in 18 outings for Besiktas this season, and also famously scored both late goals in the Netherlands' quarter-final clash with Argentina at the World Cup last month.

The 30-year-old appeared to wave goodbye to Besiktas fans when celebrating his goal against Kasimpasa on Saturday.

MEN Sport revealed on Thursday that United had hoped to sign the forward in time for this weekend's derby against City with the player flying to Manchester for a medical. However, the move could not be registered before the deadline of midday Friday.

The attacker arrived at Burnley from Wolfsburg last January in a deal worth around £15m and went on to score two goals in 20 Premier League outings. He had previously scored 25, 20 and 18 goals for Wolfsburg in the three preceding seasons.
