Besiktas release statement on Wout Weghorst amid Manchester United transfer interest

Besiktas have released a statement announcing that reports suggesting striker Wout Weghorst is set to leave the club for a Premier League side are 'fictitious' and denying the existence of an exit clause in his contract.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a loan move for the 30-year-old striker, who is currently on loan with the Turkish giants from Burnley. The Manchester Evening News understands that the club are working on a compensation package that would convince Besiktas to terminate Weghorst's loan and allow the striker to move to Old Trafford.

The Reds have made an offer to Burnley, which has been passed on to the Turkish giants, but Besiktas have rejected that proposal. They claimed that they plan to keep hold of the player until the summer.

On Monday (January 9), Besiktas released a statement dismissing suggestions that Weghorst was set to leave the club, admitting that any developments would be shared if they were any.

"The claim that there is an exit clause in our football player’s contract, stating that his contract can be terminated with a compensation of 2.5 million Euros in case of an offer from the Premier League, is fictitious," a statement read.

"However, the news that the player in question will leave the team on Tuesday is completely untrue. The initiative regarding Wout Weghorst belongs entirely to Beşiktaş. If there is a development on this issue, the information will be shared."

The Dutch striker has scored nine goals in 18 games for Besiktas, who claim that they have a €10million option to sign him permanently in the summer. His loan deal from Burnley does not include a recall clause, so all three clubs are currently in negotiations about a deal.
