Besiktas could make a move for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard after club's terrible start to the season

Steven Gerrard was part of the Liverpool side that beat Besiktas 8-0 in the Europa League 11 years ago.

But it seems the Turkish club are not holding any grudges with the Reds legend thought to be at the top of their list to replace manager Abdullah Avci.

A dreadful start to the season has seen Besiktas pick up just eight points from seven games and has left them hovering just above the relegation zone.

Club President Fikret Orman announced two weeks ago that he would be stepping down from his role with the new chief set to be named next Sunday.

BeIN Sports Turkey believe the new President could sack manager Abdullah Avci and journalist Mehmet Demirkol revealed ( via beIN Manset ) Gerrard is one of the prime candidates to replace him.

He said: "I heard one of the strong candidates, Ahmet Nur Cebi, has a different name in his mind. Steven Gerrard’s name is being discussed. Also, I know Sergen Yalcin could replace Abdullah Avci if he wins the race."

Liverpool's Loris Karius is currently at the Turkish Super Lig club.

The Rangers boss has also been linked with a move to Leeds United if Marcelo Bielsa leaves the club and Jurgen Klopp named him as the man he thinks should succeed him when he leaves Anfield.

Gerrard is in his second season with the Gers who are currently two points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League table.

The former Liverpool skipper is set to make a double appearance in the Liverpool vs Rangers legends game at Ibrox on Saturday.
