Besides tagging A.J. Green, Bengals were quiet on first day of legal tampering

The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t do much on the first day of free agency — now dubbed the legal-tampering period.

Free agency really starts Wednesday but it’s a wink-wink sort of thing at this point.

Granted, slapping the franchise tag on A.J. Green is a big deal. And the Bengals and Bears once again popped up in rumors about an Andy Dalton trade.

But as far as concrete developments go? Not much.

Meanwhile, notable players such as the following agreed to deals, per reports:

  • Shaq Lawson
  • Graham Glasgow
  • Nick Kwiatkoski
  • Halapoulivaati Vaitai
  • Byron Jones
  • James Bradberry
  • Javon Hargrave

There are plenty of quality free agents left on the board of course. But the reality is simple — the Bengals were never going to dole out so much money on the first wave. Glasgow, for example, saw his price balloon once Brandon Scherff and Joe Thuney got tags and signed for $44 million with $26 million guaranteed.

Once the guaranteed numbers start dipping we can probably expect the Bengals to be more active. There’s reason to suspect they’re busy negotiating a Dalton trade behind the scenes too.

But as expected, the Bengals didn’t do much on Day 1.
