CHON BURI: A Russian tourist smashed a glass door, went into convulsions and then collapsed unconscious after hotel staff prevented him from jumping from a room balcony in Pattaya beach town in the early hours of Wednesday.

The tourist, identified later as Chmutov Igor, 35, was lying unconscious with multiple wounds on his body when police entered a room on the third floor of Pattaya Garden hotel on Soi Na Klue in Bang Lamung district shortly before 1am, said Pol Capt Chavalit Suwanmanee, a deputy crime suppression chief with Pattaya police.

Pieces of a shattered glass door were found scattered on the bloodstained floor.

Rescue workers and medics gave the man first aid before taking him to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital.

Ananthawee Saiyot, 55, a hotel guard, told police that the tourist went berserk and tried to jump from his hotel room balcony. Hotel staffers managed to pull the man back the balcony, but he then kicked the glass door, sustaining injuries, went into convulsions and collapsed, the guard said. Hotel staff then alerted police.

It took about 10 people to carry him downstairs, the guard said, because the tourist weighed about 170-180kg.
