Berwick train station closed after criminals blow up cash machine

A train station in Northumberland has been shut down after a cash machine was blown up.

Police officers were called to Berwick train station on Railway Street just before 4am on Wednesday after an explosion inside.

A group had got inside the station and used explosives to damage a cash machine and remove the money from inside.

Officers are now investigating the damage and theft.

Trains, including LNER services, have been unable to stop at Berwick station on Wednesday morning.

A large amount of shattered glass can be seen in front of the station entrance as the force of the explosion blew out the windows.

A police cordon has also been put in place during the investigation.

It is not yet known when the station will reopen, but a replacement bus service is running between Berwick and Alnmouth.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police (BTP) said: "British Transport Police were called at 3.48am on March 4 to Berwick station following a report of theft from a cash machine.

"A group are reported to have used an explosive substance to damage the cash machine and remove its contents.

"The suspects then fled the scene.

"Officers from BTP and Northumbria Police attended and inquiries into the incident are ongoing. The station is currently shut due to damage."
