Berwick station reopens to train passengers after cash machine blown up

A Northumberland train station has reopened 24 hours after a cash machine was blown up.

A group had got inside Berwick train station on Railway Street just before 4am on Wednesday and used explosives to blow open a ATM and access the money inside.

The explosion caused significant damage and blew out the windows of the station near to the entrance.

The station remained closed throughout Wednesday as emergency services investigated the damage and the structure of the building was made safe.

A police cordon was put in place during the investigation and a large amount of shattered glass could be seen outside the station.

During the closure, trains were unable to stop at Berwick and passengers travelled on a bus replacement service between Berwick and Alnmouth.

On Thursday morning it was confirmed that the station was reopening, although some facilities, including the Costa Coffee, would stay closed.

The smashed windows have also been boarded up.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police (BTP) said: "British Transport Police were called at 3.48am on March 4 to Berwick station following a report of theft from a cash machine.

"A group are reported to have used an explosive substance to damage the cash machine and remove its contents.

"The suspects then fled the scene.

"Officers from BTP and Northumbria Police attended and inquiries into the incident are ongoing."
