Bertie Auld remembered as Celtic fans tell legend 'thanks for the memories' - Hotline

Scottish football has lost one of the greats with the passing of Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld at the weekend and you’d need to go a long way to find anyone to have a bad word to say about wee Ten Thirty.

Mr Celtic was loved by fans of all generations and he’ll be badly missed around his beloved Parkhead.

Stephen Johnstone, Ardentinny, said: “Bertie Auld was the most charismatic of the Lisbon Lions, famous Celtic team that won the first ever European Cup the first team to do so and all from Scotland. In management he was also a Hibs legend. RIP, thanks for the memories. Bertie you were auld school.”

Bud Hay, Dumfries, said: “I would like to take this opportunity in thanking Bertie Auld for doing everything he did for Celtic, especially winning the European Cup as one of the Lisbon Lions.

“Bertie, you were one of the greats. RIP, you will never walk alone.”

Kenneth Wilson emailed: “Bertie Auld was an absolute Celtic legend and his love for the club was there for all to see. You just had to listen to the man to feel his passion for the club. RIP.”

John Caw, via email, said: “Another great has gone from our midst. Rest in peace Bertie. You’ll never walk alone. Brings back memories of boyhood days in Ruchill Park and on to be one of the greats in football.”

Rangers are closing in on appointing Gio van Bronckhorst as replacement for Steven Gerrard, but Celtic fans don’t seem worried.

Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: “I keep hearing about Van Bronckhorst winning a title with Feyenoord in 2017. But what about the years after that?

“I haven't heard anyone mention that he went on to finish over 20 points behind Ajax and PSV and fourth in the league behind AZ Alkmaar in the next two seasons with awful European results ending in fans wanting him out.”

Paul McArdle, Gourock, said: “If you think Gerrard was a success then I hope GVB has the same amount of success as he did.

“Let’s go ... right out the door!”

Brian McColligan, via email, said: “Let’s put all the Steven Gerrard furore into perspective, he only got the chance to stop the 10 by his inability to stop the eight then the double nine.”

Denis Bruce, Bishopbriggs, said: “Perhaps the outcry against Gerrard’s departure for Aston Villa could be interpreted as his going away gift in that £4.5m Rangers received in compensation should help to pay the wages’ bill of a financially distressed club for a couple of months.”

Jimmy Mac, Glasgow, said: “Rangers need to stop Gerrard stealing our players at any cost or say goodbye to £40m Champions league money. The man has no honour.

“Gerrard showed no loyalty whatsoever to Rangers for putting him the spotlight in management. He is a lip service man only and says what people want to hear.

“Beale was the real manager not Gerrard as we all saw him every week telling Gerrard how to play the team.”

But John Bruce emailed: “Chris Sutton slated Steven Gerrard for only winning one trophy in nine and for leaving Rangers in the lurch. True, he did only win one trophy – but what a trophy! It took Rangers to 55 and stopped Celtic from getting 10 In A Row, a dagger in the heart of every Celtic fan.

“They are four points clear at the top of the league, favourites for the finals of the League Cup and within two games of reaching the group stages of the Europa League. Hardly left in the lurch.”
