A state funeral service for entertainer Bert Newton will be held next Friday, November 12, in Melbourne, the Victorian government has announced.

The service will be held at St Patrick's Cathedral in East Melbourne.

Due to COVID-19 requirements, only friends, family and colleagues will be able to attend.

The proceedings will be live streamed and people wishing to pay tribute have been asked to consider making a donation to VMCH's O'Neill House in lieu of floral tributes.

Newton's wife Patti said she was thrilled for Bert to be honoured with the ceremony and that a state funeral was fitting for a man who was proudly Victorian.

"I think Bert would love it. I think it will be very nice and it's a wonderful gesture," Patti Newton said.

"He's very Melbourne. Even though he's worked in all different states, Melbourne was his state and his love."

Newton was born in the then-working class Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy North in 1938, before becoming a radio broadcaster at local station 3XY at the age of 15.

Newton died aged 83 last weekend following health complications arising from a leg amputation in May.
