US Democrat Bernie Sanders has signalled that he plans to run for President in 2020 - unless someone else can do a better job.

The Vermont Senator told New York Magazine: "If it turns out that I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump, then I will probably run."

But he added: "I’m not one of those sons of multimillionaires whose parents told them they were going to become president of the United States.

"I don’t wake up in the morning with any burning desire that I have to be president.

"If there’s somebody else who appears who can, for whatever reason, do a better job than me, I’ll work my ass off to elect him or her."

The 77-year-old left-wing candidate narrowly lost out on becoming the Democratic Presidential nominee to Hillary Clinton in 2016.

He also told ABC's The View on Monday: "I would not be honest with you if I did not say that I am thinking of that.

"Also, there are other great candidates out there, many of them personal friends of mine.

"I think what is more important right now is that Trump be defeated, his hateful rhetoric and his divisiveness, and that we come together as a nation respectfully."

"There is so much work to do that we don’t need to spend our time listening to someone trying to divide us up.

"The job of our president in these difficult times is to bring our people together, not to divide people up with cheap votes."

Mr Sanders is one of Mr Trump’s most vocal critics, having called him the "most racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted president in history".

However, Mr Sander's advisers reportedly fear another run could be more difficult than anticipated. In July, over 200 centrist Democrats will meet in Columbus, Ohio, to plan how to beat both him and Mr Trump.

Despite this, in recent months, his allies have talked about 2020 roles with dozens of former and potential campaign workers.

Mr Sanders, along with many other rumoured 2020 Democratic contenders, campaigned across the country in support of Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterm elections.

Other prospective candidates include former Vice President Joe Biden, who is also in his late 70s, and Beto O'Rourke, who ran for Senator in Texas this month.
