Bernie Sanders jokes 'on a good day my wife likes me' after Hillary Clinton suggests 'nobody' does

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders has joked that his wife likes him "on a good day" after his former rival Hillary Clinton suggested nobody does.

The comments are the latest spat between the pair, who ran against each other in the race to face Donald Trump in 2016.

Mrs Clinton, 72, beat Mr Sanders to become the Democratic candidate, before losing to President Trump in the race itself.

The former first lady remains a prominent figure within US politics and launched a blistering attack on Mr Sanders's likeability in a new documentary.

"He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done," she said in the new Hulu series.

And asked whether her assessment still holds she told the Hollywood Reporter: "Yes, it does."

Mr Sanders, who is among the Democrats hoping to run against President Trump later this year, said Mrs Clinton is "entitled to her point of view" when quizzed on her remarks.

He said: "On a good day my wife likes me, so let's clear the air on that one.

"Secretary Clinton is entitled to her point of view."

Mr Sanders said he was focusing on the impeachment trial as opposed to her comments, when pressed by ABC.

Asked "why do you think the secretary is still talking about 2016?" he replied: "That is a good question, ask her."

Facing criticism for her comments, Mrs Clinton responded by suggesting she thought people would appreciate her honesty.

"I thought everyone wanted my authentic, unvarnished views," she tweeted.

"But to be serious, the number one priority for our country and world is retiring Trump, and, as I always have, I will do whatever I can to support our nominee."
