Bernie Sanders backs Cardi B after she says she wants to be a politician

American rapper Cardi B has been praised by Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders after she expressed her ambitions to become a politician.

The 27-year-old music star touted a move into public office on Sunday when she tweeted: "I think I want to be a politician."

She then added: "I really love government even tho I don’t agree with Goverment [sic]."

Mr Sanders, who hopes to be picked by his party to run against President Donald Trump later this year, said he thought it would be "great" for her to bring her experiences into the political forum.

He told TMZ: "Cardi B is deeply concerned about what's happening in the country.

"She knows what it's like to live in poverty and struggle, and it would be great for her to bring that experience to politics."

Cardi B and Mr Sanders have discussed politics together before, with the rapper joining him to film a campaign video last July.

In this, she interviewed the 78-year-old in a nail bar in Detroit.

She has expressed support for his run to become US president.

Mr Sanders is embroiled in a disagreement with Elizabeth Warren, who claims Mr Sanders told her during a private meeting in 2018 that he did not believe a woman could win the White House.

Mr Sanders vehemently denies the claims.
