Bernd Leno red card: Arsenal goalkeeper sent off for handball outside the box in Wolves defeat

Photograph: Reuters

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was sent off in bizarre circumstances as the Gunners imploded in defeat at Wolves.

Leno rushed out of his area and punched the ball out for a throw-in, even though his clearly several yards outside his box. In doing so, Leno denied a goalscoring opportunity and left referee Craig Pawson with little option but to show one of the strangest red cards of the season.

The moment capped a disastrous evening for Arsenal, who had led 1-0 through Nicolas Pepe and were seemingly cruising before things turned just before half-time.

David Luiz brought down Wolves striker Willian Jose moments before half-time and that too was deemed a denial of a goalscoring opportunity. The Brazilian defender was sent off and Ruben Neves equalised from the spot.

Joao Moutinho then fired a rocket home just after the break to give Wolves 2-1 lead, and Leno’s red card reduced Arsenal to nine men to cap a miserable night for Mikel Arteta and his side.
