Bernd Leno breaks silence over Arsenal gaffe in defeat to Chelsea

Bernd Leno admits he endured a "very tough day" as Arsenal were beaten by Chelsea in the London derby.

Arsenal were heading for their first win under new boss Mikel Arteta when a Leno howler gifted Chelsea an equaliser at the Emirates.

Leno came to try and collect a Willian free-kick but fluffed his lines before Jorginho tapped into an empty net.

The mistake was the turning point in the match as Chelsea went on to claim all three points through Tammy Abraham.

Arsenal have now won just one of their last 15 matches in all competitions and remain 12th in the Premier League.

Leno took to social media to accept responsibility for his error against Chelsea.

"Very tough day today but I have to look forward," the German goalkeeper wrote after the high-profile gaffe.

Arteta refused to criticise his goalkeeper, despite his side appearing set for three points after a much-improved display.

He said: ”Bernd will be down but it's our job to lift him. He's done a really good job since he arrived here.

“We have to respect what he’s done at the club and get him back on board.”

"I blame my team. We are responsible for everything we did wrong on that football pitch."

After the match, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard suggested Jorginho was lucky to be on the pitch to score the equaliser.

The Italian escaped a second yellow card for a pull back on Matteo Guendouzi during the second half.

Arsenal return to action against Manchester United on New Year's Day as they bid to climb the Premier League table.
