Bernd Leno admits he does not want Petr Cech to play in the Europa League final

Bernd Leno has admitted he wants to be selected ahead of Petr Cech for the Europa League final.

The Arsenal no.1 looks set to start on the bench for Wednesday's clash with Chelsea in Baku.

Back-up stopper Cech has played every round in the competition for the Gunners this season, despite being Leno's understudy in the Premier League.

Boss Unai Emery is understood to be keeping faith with Cech for the final, despite rumours that he will be joining former club Chelsea as sporting director at the end of the season.

But Leno revealed he hopes to be chosen to start the final instead of his Czech teammate.

Speaking to Kicker, via Metro , Leno said: "I have great respect for Petr, and we get along very well. He deserves all credit, and I treat him well, but it’s clear that I’m an athlete, I want to always play, especially in a final."

Cech announced earlier in the season that he would be retiring from playing at the end of the current campaign.

The 37-year-old has enjoyed a distinguished career, having won four Premier League titles at Chelsea, as well as the Europa League and the Champions League.

Leno is yet to play in a European final, and victory on Wednesday would see the Gunners qualify for next season's Champions League.

He added: "To win the Europa League would be the first big title for me. We all want to hear the [Champions League] anthem again.

"The Thursday-Sunday rhythm is also not so good because you always suffer in the league. If we lose the final, our season, which was actually good, would be disappointing."

Arsenal will have to win the contest however, who has decided not to travel to Baku over fears for his safety.

The Armenian international refused to play any part in the fixture, due to ongoing tensions between his homeland and host nation Azerbaijan.
