Bernardo Silva muscle injury leaves him in a race to make Aviva clash with Ireland

Bernardo Silva is facing a race to be fit for Portugal's World Cup qualifier against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium tomorrow night.

Silva, 27, did not participate in training with the Portugal squad in Lisbon today and will be assessed tomorrow morning at training before players take an afternoon flight to Dublin.

The Manchester City star scored in his club's 2-0 victory over Manchester United last Sunday and is nursing a muscle injury. He has scored eight times in 63 caps for his country.

There were no injury issues for Ireland boss Stephen Kenny to deal with yesterday but he must prepare his side for the added threat of AC Milan’s Rafael Leão and Atlético Madrid’s João Félix, who didn't play in Faro when the sides met on September 1.

On that occasion, Ireland led 2-1 in the 89th minute before two late goals by Cristiano Ronaldo earned his team a precious victory.

A win for Portugal in Dublin would need them leaving a draw at home to Serbia next week to clinch automatic qualification for the World Cup.
