The Blues midfielder was hugely impressed at the way the travelling support at Carrow Road got behind the team, and rallied around the players at the end of the game.
And that planted the seed of the breathtaking display of attacking football which swept aside the Hornets and brought City their biggest Premier League win.
“We wanted to give our fans that after the defeat at Norwich – it was amazing the way they supported us after that defeat,” said Bernardo, who claimed the first hat-trick of his career.
“When you lose you always want a good response, especially for the fans who didn’t deserve that defeat.
“We played well against Shakhtar and again against Norwich. We are always hungry for more.
“The first 30 minutes was unbelievable. Luckily we scored a lot of goals which gave us the confidence to keep going and keep controlling the ball to create more chances.
“After the defeat at Norwich it was good to not only get the three points, but also a good performance.”
Bernardo said he had no words for the shattered opposition at the end of the game.
“You don’t say anything. You just say ‘Good luck for the rest of the season',” he said.
“We have won 8-0 but other days I have lost 4-0 and 5-0 and I know how it is. It’s football – sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and sometimes you get big defeats. You keep going.”
