Bernardo Silva edges out Riyad Mahrez in Man City player of the month vote

MEN readers have made their votes count to select Manchester City's player of the month for September.

Having coasted to a third Premier League title in four seasons, Pep Guardiola and his star-studded team slipped to defeat on the opening day of this campaign against Tottenham - minus England captain and summer transfer target Harry Kane - in August.

However, they went through last month unbeaten; at least in their respective domestic charges.

September victories over Leicester City and Chelsea enabled City to pick up seven points from a possible nine that were on offer in the Premier League - while they also recorded a staggering 6-3 win over Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

It was only in their final outing of the month, away to PSG in Europe, that Guardiola and his squad were beaten.

But who was the stand-out performer during that time?

Manchester Evening News readers were asked to submit their nominations via our monthly survey - and there was not too much to pick between the top two contenders there.

In the end, Bernardo Silva finished top of the class with 40.8 per cent of the vote.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez (35.3 per cent) was pipped to the award in second-place, while Gabriel Jesus (13.9 per cent) and £100million man Jack Grealish (10 per cent) also featured.

Bernardo was particularly impressive during an eye-catching victory at Stamford Bridge.

Avenging defeat to the same opponents in last season's Champions League showpiece, the scores were settled by rejuvenated Brazil international Jesus, but it was his Portuguese teammate who led the fight during that match and others throughout the course of September.
