Bernardo Silva apologises to the FA over controversial Benjamin Mendy tweet

Bernardo Silva has written to the FA, expressing regret for any offence caused by the controversial tweet sent to Manchester City team-mate Benjamin Mendy.

Bernardo submitted his letter - written by himself - expressing regret for any unintentional offence caused by the tweet, which compared Mendy to the character on a sweet brand available in Spain and Portugal.

The letter was submitted before the 5pm deadline set by the FA on Thursday, with Mendy also having issued a submission to the FA, in support of Bernardo, insisting he did not take any offence.

The FA are still investigating the episode, which could still land Bernardo with a six-match ban, despite his contrition and the support of Mendy.

And Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has again defended Silva against accusations of racism following the controversial tweet.

Anti-discriminatory body Kick It Out has called on the Football Association to take action against Silva, referring to the contents of the post as a racist stereotype, while the governing body has written to City requesting their observations.

But Guardiola has once more stood up for his player, saying: "The people who judge Bernardo don't know him. He is an exceptional person."

And Liverpool icon John Barnes said the accusations are "ridiculous" and that Silva's tweet had nothing to do with racism.

"There's absolutely nothing wrong with it," former Liverpool winger Barnes told Sky Sports News.

"It's ridiculous. It's a cartoon, and in many respects I've seen it, and I think he looks like a young Mendy. I don't see what the issue is.

"This has got nothing to do with racism. They are friends. Regardless of whether it looks like Mendy or not, why is that offensive?

"Are Kick It Out and the FA wrong? Yes."
