Controversial until the end, Bernard Manning made jokes at the expense of women, gays and ethnic minorities.
Towards the milder end of his repertoire you might find the following:
"I'm glad I'm not bisexual; I couldn't stand being rejected by men as well as women."
or
"I once got sacked for laughing ... mind you, I was driving a hearse at the time."
But most of his gags were a lot closer to the bone, risking offence to vast numbers of people.
To many, Manning was a racist bigot whose humour went beyond a joke and cast a shameful shadow not just over British comedy but the country's sense of taste and decency.
