Cardinal Bernard Law, the embroiled Boston archbishop depicted in the Academy Award-winning film "Spotlight," has died at age 86 in Rome, according to WFXT-TV.
Law left his Massachusetts post in 2002 for mishandling the priest sex abuse scandal that rocked the clergy community.
He admitted to knowing about the rampant child abuse and allowing the priests to continue serving the diocese and stepped down nearly a year after The Boston Globe broke its damning coverage.
He apologized during Sunday Mass. He remained a Cardinal after his resignation and went on to serve as the Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. He retired in 2011.
Law was portrayed by actor Len Cariou in the 2015 film that also starred Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and John Slattery.
