Bernard becomes Everton's key difference as he shows what fans expect to see

Bernard has been hailed for his strong return to the Everton starting lineup in his side's 1-0 win over Brighton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Richarlison bagged the only goal of the game in the first half to capitalise on the Blues' early dominance as Carlo Ancelotti's men made sure they bounced back from their disappointment at Anfield a week previously.

But it was his fellow Brazilian that caught the eye of many.

Bernard was making his first start since the home win over Burnley on Boxing Day and he proved influential for Everton, creating a number of chances across his 70 minutes on the pitch before receiving a great ovation when substituted in the second half.

The 27-year-old made four key passes during the game, which was more than anyone else on the pitch.

And pundit Danny Murphy believed the Brazilian proved to be the key difference in the Blues' game following their Anfield disappointment - and the winger showed exactly what supporters needed to see.

"He made a difference," Murphy told Match of the Day.

"The front two were really good as well, as they have been since Ancelotti came in, Richarlison got his goal and took it well. Bernard gave them the extra creativity that they were missing at Anfield, particularly in the second half.

"He’s a skillful player and at times we see him play like this but as often as the Evertonians would like.

"He was positive, he wanted to play forward, they need a player like that, the front two, someone who is confident enough when they’re at home and there is a bit of pressure on. You do give balls away when you’re playing forward and trying to create.

"He was good, coming off the left. First half, this was the type of performance Everton fans expect to see. Good energy, good tempo, putting Brighton on the back foot and they deserved their win.

"He should score more given his technical ability."
