Bermondsey fire updates: Huge blaze at London recycling centre with black smoke seen from miles away

A huge fire has broken out at a reycling centre in London.

London Fire Brigade has sent 100 firefighters to deal with the blaze, which has sent a plume of black smoke into the sky.

The brigade was first called to the fire at 5.32pm.

The blaze has also resutled in disruption for train services in the area with services diverted and cancelled.

In a statement, London Fire Brigade said: “Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are tackling a fire at a recycling centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey.

“Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.”

Residents in Bermondsey have been urged to keep their windows and doors closed as crews tackle a large blaze at a recycling centre in the area.

‘The fire in #Bermondsey is affecting a recycling centre,” the London Fire Brigade posted on X.

“Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.”

Major disruption expected at London Bridge for hours

“Major disruption” is expected throughout the evening at London Bridge, according to National Rail.

It said it expected cancellations and delays to services to and from the station until 22:30 on Monday.

“A fire on a property next to the railway at London Bridge means that some lines are blocked,” a notice on its website reads.

“As a result, trains running to / from / through London Bridge may be cancelled, revised or diverted.

“Major disruption expected until 22:30.”

Crews use 32-metre turntable ladders to extinguish flames

Fire crews are using two 32-metre turntable ladders as water towers to help extinguish the flames in Bermondsey this evening.

In a post on X, the London Fire Brigade wrote: “Firefighters are working hard to tackle this fire at a recycling centre in #Bermondsey.

“Two of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders are being used as water towers to help extinguish the fire from above.”

Thameslink also reports disruption caused by fire

Thameslink said that all lines between London Bridge and Dartford were blocked due to the fire, advising people to leave an extra 30 minutes to complete their journeys.

Tickets can be used at no extra cost on alternative Thameslink services via Dartford or Bromley South and Southeastern services between Rainham and London Bridge, they said.
