Berkeley balcony collapse survivor Aoife Beary dies aged 27

A Dublin woman who survived the tragic Berkeley balcony collapse that killed six people has sadly passed away.

Aoife Beary was one of 13 people who was on the fourth-floor balcony in California when it collapsed on June 16, 2015.

Lorcan Miller, Eimear Walsh, Niccolai Schuster, Eoghan Culligan, and cousins Olivia Burke and Ashley Donohoe all lost their lives while celebrating Aoife's birthday.

The Blackrock native passed away in Beaumont Hospital on New Year's Day after suffering a stroke, according to the Irish Times.

She was just 27 years old.

Aoife suffered life-changing injuries in the accident, including a brain injury, several broken bones, and lacerations to her organs.

She underwent open heart surgery and a long period of rehabilitation in a hospital in Santa Clara between July and September 2015 and, amazingly, she was soon able to walk again.

In the years following the tragedy, Aoife went back to college in Oxford, and also began campaigning against the company that built the balcony.

Aoife is survived by her parents Mike and Angela, her younger brother Tim, her younger sister Anna, and her extended family.
