'Bergwijn season!' - Tottenham fans love Jose Mourinho's team selection for Man City clash

Jose Mourinho has decided to hand Steven Bergwijn his Tottenham debut for this afternoon's game against Man City.

The Spurs head coach has made one change to his side from last weekend's draw against Southampton in the FA Cup and that sees the Dutch international replace Gedson Fernandes in the team.

While some managers may have resisted the temptation of throwing the new signing straight into action, Mourinho has decided to go with him from the off.

It's a vitally important game for the Lilywhites in the battle for a top-four place as they look to capitalise on Chelsea's 2-2 draw at Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

Tottenham transfer window verdict

The team are currently seven points behind their London rivals but they can whittle that down to four points providing that they beat the reigning league champions.

The Spurs team is extremely attacking with Bergwijn joining the likes of Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso in the side.

Mourinho's selection has gone down extremely well with supporters and they've had plenty to say on Twitter about the team news.

Asked what kind of player Spurs are getting in the Dutchman, Mourinho said: "I don't want to compare [him], especially with players from other teams. I don't do that, but he's a winger, that's what he is.

"In the club, [he played] more on the left, in the national team more on the right, so for him it doesn't make a huge difference to be playing on either side.

"And I think you go to WyScout you can easily find his qualities. But of course I don't like to create big expectations, I don't think it's fair.

"I think he's a player for the future of the club, he's a young boy, let's not try to make him under the pressure of arriving having to perform, has to score, has to be man of the match, has to start the game.

"We are not on this level of pressure, but a player that I think sooner or later the fans are going to love.

"To find a winger that fits in our way of playing – young, creative, enthusiastic with a lot of develop, that can also create a connection with the fans because we know what the Tottenham fans wants – we found with Stevie this profile of player."
