Benton woman runs marathon around her street in memory of loving dad

A daughter has helped to raise hundreds of pounds in memory of her loving dad by running a marathon around her home.

Cheryl Palliser-Bosomworth, of Benton, ran the 26.2 miles around her street.

The 47-year-old was due to take part in the London Marathon in aid of the British Lung Foundation (BLF), however, the event had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

So Cheryl decided to carry out the run by going around in loops on three streets around her home.

She finished the 26.2 miles in just over five hours, completing 42 loops.

She managed to raise around £2,500 for the charity, in memory of her dad Kevin Canham, who died from mesothelioma in 2012 at the age of 67.

Mr Canham was a highly-respected engineer and businessman who founded Air Conditioning Refrigeration (ACR) Ltd.

He had been exposed to asbestos while working as an engineer on Tyneside’s shipyards as a teenager.

He was diagnosed with mesothelioma but died after a brave battle against the lung disease.

His daughter has since been a great supporter of the British Lung Foundation, which carries out research into conditions including mesothelioma.

She said: "I was going to do the London Marathon to help raise money for the charity but the event was postponed.

"I still wanted to do something to raise money so I decided to do the marathon around my home.

"I started at 7am and ran around in loops around my street. I had great support and a lot of neighbours cheered me on. There was a nice community feel."

This was not Cheryl's first marathon - she has taken part in the London Marathon before as well as one in Paris and Edinburgh.

She started running three years ago and has raised around £15,000 for the BLF over the years.

She added: "With coronavirus being a lung disease, I wanted to make sure we could help to raise money for the charity and help with the work it does.

"It was quite a challenge but I received lots of support."
