Benjamin Watson doesn’t expect Patriots to slow him down on social media

Bill Belichick isn’t the biggest fan of social media. He seems to mock the different mediums at every opportunity. At the outset of past seasons, the New England Patriots have even encouraged their players to take a decreased role on social media, in an effort to keep them from making headlines.

But veteran Benjamin Watson doesn’t expect New England to curtail his social media presence. He intends to keep talking about social issues.

“I truly believe we’re not going to agree on everything when it comes to football obviously, but when it comes to issues of our day, everything’s ramping up,” Watson said at Gillette Stadium after organized team activities on Thursday. “We’ve got elections coming up, we’ve got Supreme Court cases, we’ve got all those sorts of things. We’ve got a lot of awareness now when it comes to different — what we would call — social issues.

“And so I truly believe that we all have a platform. You, me, we all have a sphere of influence and I believe that my goal is to influence people in what I believe is the right way. and as long as I’m speaking truth and speaking in love, even though we may disagree, I feel like that’s what we’re missing most. So my biggest thing is if someone has a different opinion, it’s not about name calling or degrading other people, we can disagree. We can challenge each other. And that is something that I believe I will always continue to do, but try to do it the right way.”
