Benjamin Mendy sends message to Man City teammates after Champions League exit

Benjamin Mendy has told his Manchester City teammates they must dust themselves off and go again this weekend as they continue their bid to retain their Premier League crown.

City were eliminated from the Champions League in heartbreaking circumstances on Wednesday night as Raheem Sterling's injury-time clincher against Tottenham was disallowed following a VAR review for offside.

City won 4-3 on the night but went out on away goals having lost the first leg of the quarter-final tie 1-0 in north London last week.

Spurs are the visitors again in this Saturday's lunchtime kick-off and Mendy knows City must bounce back or risk slipping behind Liverpool in the title race.

"We don't have time to think about this because we play Tottenham again on Saturday," Mendy said.

"It isn't easy, but we must focus on the Premier League and the FA Cup.

"We gave everything we could but we cannot complain about the VAR - those are the rules and we have to respect them.

"Our fans were fatalistic but it wasn't to be and we move on."

Ultimately, the correct call was made on Sterling's late strike but Pep Guardiola bemoaned the officials' failure to disallow what proved to be the decisive goal from Tottenham striker Fernando Llorente.

Replays hinted there might have been a slight touch off the Spaniard's hand before the ball deflected past Ederson off his thigh and the City manager made his discontent with the non-decision clear.

“I support VAR but maybe from one angle Fernando Llorente’s goal is handball, maybe from the referee’s angle it is not,” Guardiola said.
