Benjamin Mendy sends message to Man City fans after costly error in Wolves defeat

Benjamin Mendy vowed to fans he would make amends for his costly mistake in Manchester City's defeat to Wolves on Friday night.

Wolves came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against 10-man City , leaving the Premier League champions' title defence in tatters.

The defeat left City a whopping 14 points behind leaders Liverpool , who have a game in hand.

Left-back Mendy was at fault for Wolves' equaliser, losing possession in City's area when he should cleared it.

The mistake allowed Adama Traore to build on his opening goal for Wolves, crossing low for Raul Jimenez to fire in the equaliser, before Matt Doherty went on to score the winner.

Wolves' stunning comeback came after Raheem Sterling had fired City two goals ahead, despite goalkeeper Ederson having been sent off just 12 minutes into the game for rushing out of his area and taking out Diego Jota.

Afterwards, Mendy took to Twitter to own up to his "big mistake" and pledge that stuttering City would soon be back to their scintillating best.

He tweeted: "It's easy to talk when everything is going well, but it's hard to do when sh*t hits the fan... Big mistake tonight and I owe you my best for your continued support. Time to keep our heads up & keep working to come back at our best level. #comeoncity"

Pep Guardiola's City face a short turnaround before their next Premier League game as they host seventh-placed Sheffield United on Sunday.

They are now looking at ensuring a top-four spot and trying to overhaul Leicester City in second place rather than defending their title - barring a dramatic collapse in fortunes for rampant league leaders Liverpool.

City begin their FA Cup defence when they host Port Vale on January 4, while they also face a two-legged EFL Cup semi-final against Manchester United before resuming their Champions League campaign against Real Madrid in the round of 16 in February.
