Benjamin Mendy insists Manchester City should not be thinking about the Champions League quarter finals before they have finished the job against Real Madrid in the last-16.
City produced one of their best-ever European displays at the Bernabeu in the last-16 first leg to emerge 2-1 winners thanks to Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne goals.
The second leg was postponed when the Real Madrid squad went into isolation in March after a member of their basketball squad displayed COVID-19 symptoms, and the Champions League was suspended indefinitely soon after.
UEFA intend to complete the tournament, reportedly in August, where City will play the home leg with the one-goal advantage.
But despite their performance in Madrid, Mendy says City's dream of winning the Champions League shouldn't distract them from the task of booking their place in the next round.
He said: “We had a good game in Madrid and now we still have to play the second leg. I know that in the minds of every player they know that just because we won there does not mean that it is finished or that we are qualified.
"It is not every day that you go to somewhere like the Bernabeu and perform like that in the Champions League. We have an opportunity to go far in this cup and we want it, so everybody wakes up, works out, stays focused on the target for when they say we can come back. We don’t have the Champions League yet so it is the dream.”
Mendy's teammate Bernardo Silva expressed a similar warning in an interview with AS, saying: "You can't write any team off, far less Madrid who have won 13 European Cups.
"No one else has the experience Madrid's players have in this competition, so we can't think we've already beaten them.
"It's all very open. When you play a side like Madrid nothing is ever certain. We've seen a lot of ties in the last few years get turned around. Look at Barca last year, beating Liverpool 3-0 and then losing 4-0. You never know.
"It's a good result and we're in a great position to go through to the quarter-finals. It's a tough match and we'll need to play well and maintain our concentration."
